Dhaka, Bangladesh, November 6, 2024 – Leaders from the United Nations, Government, Private Sector, and Civil Society convened at The Westin Dhaka for Sustainability Day 2024, under the theme “Building Resilience: Advancing Sustainability.” This year’s event captured a pivotal moment in Bangladesh’s journey, reflecting on the nation’s shifting political landscape, regulatory transformations, and imminent graduation from the Least Developed Countries (LDC) category.
Hosted in the Grand Ballroom, the event fostered critical discussions on fortifying Bangladesh’s path toward a resilient and sustainable future. The Inaugural Session welcome distinguished guests, including Mr. Farooq Sobhan, Network Representative of the UN Global Compact Network Bangladesh; Mr. Stefan Liller, Resident Representative of UNDP Bangladesh; H.E. Mr. Christian Brix Møller, Ambassador of Denmark to Bangladesh; H.E. Mr. Antonio Alessandro, Ambassador of Italy to Bangladesh; H.E. Ambassador M. Riaz Hamidullah, Additional Foreign Secretary (Multilateral), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Bangladesh; and H.E. Mr. Håkon Arald Gulbrandsen, Ambassador of Norway to Bangladesh. Ms. Lamiya Morshed, Principal Coordinator of Sustainable Development Goals in the Chief Advisor’s Office, attended as Chief Guest.
Chief Guest Ms. Lamiya Morshed emphasized Bangladesh’s commitment to accelerating progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and officially launched the UN Global Compact Network Bangladesh 2023-2024 Annual Report. Ms. Morshed highlighted the nation’s role in pioneering sustainable development efforts in South Asia and the importance of coordinated action across sectors.
Throughout the day, experts led discussions on key sustainability issues:
Strengthening food security across the value chain
Advancing business and human rights in Bangladesh
Harnessing technology and artificial intelligence to combat corruption
Navigating EU regulations and their implications for Bangladeshi businesses
Building capacity for Cottage, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (CMSME) to support Bangladesh’s LDC graduation
Ms. Shahamin S. Zaman, Executive Director of the UN Global Compact Network Bangladesh, concluded the event by reiterating the importance of collaborative action and resilience in addressing these challenges. She expressed optimism that the insights and commitments shared during the event would guide Bangladesh’s path forward in achieving sustainable, inclusive growth.
